One Week Old

Jonathan is starting to smile. He's getting almost everything done to head for home. We're still waiting on that oxygen saturation to stay up on its own.

The little guy drinks bottles of mom's milk like a frat boy at a weekend party. He set a time record today when I dropped by to feed him at 1pm. This healthy appetite is atypical for Downs babies (who are usually sluggish eaters).

I vacillate between anger, hope, sadness, and joy (when I'm with Jonathan) throughout the day. But, I know that all of these feelings are a part of it. So, it's OK. My father likened this journey to climbing a mountain. It's tough and arduous at times. You can get hurt. But, the perspective and view after you've been climbing a while is the reward. You can help those coming after you. And, you can gain strength from those who've gone before you. I thought the analogy was perfect. Special thanks to him for this photo.

Jonathan,

I love you so dearly. The first words I spoke to you. and to your brother Jackson when he was born are the same that I say to you today. You are "fearfully and wonderfully made". Before there was ever any time or space Jonathan, there was God. God has given us HIS love, and instruction in a book we call the Bible. And we are called Christians because we acknowledge and trust God's son, Jesus. (You will learn all about Jesus as you grow up ) King David was a man who lived long ago, and loved God with all his heart. He wrote many of the Psalms, which are in the Bible. And my favorite of all the words in the Bible is Psalm 139,which King David wrote. These words have brought me through many a hard time little one, and as you are in a tough spot right now, I wanted to give these to you for comfort. God has made you to be "reverently set apart for holiness". That is the meaning of the words in verse 14 and King David was praising God for making him so carefully and tenderly. So just know in your tender heart that as you are working to get better, your Nana is praising God for making you so wonderfully and setting you apart for holiness. Sleep well Precious.

I love you,
Nana

Jonathan,
We are so happy you have finally arrived. We have been praying for you since we found out you were coming. I was so inspired by your Nana's message that I thought I would share a verse that was special to me. One of my very favorite verses in God's word is from Jeremiah 29:11. It says that God has a special plan just for you-it is for your good and to give you hope. Ryan and I pray in agreement that Jesus heals your heart and makes you strong. We believe in you Sweetheart. We love you very much,
Julie and Ryan
P.S. You are going to have so much fun with your brother Jackson! =)

Jamie, I am a friend of your father and have a 21 year old son with Down Syndrome . I feel your original e-mail really captured the feelings that all of us as parents feel. The struggles are enormous, but the joy in every success is also enormous. I can remember where I was standing when Will sat himself up for the first time. I also am blessed to have another child . I feel so blessed at her normalcy, but I cannot remember her milestones like I do Will's. If there is anything I can do for your family please do not hesitate to call me. My Email is tigerdok@charter.net, or you can call me at home 879-4764. God bless you and Johnathan. Bill Johnston
