Recent Pictures

I thought I'd publish some recent pictures. If you haven't read it, please scroll down and read the post about the Mercedes Marathon. It's really cool what the team from Warren, Averett, Kimbrough, & Marino is doing.

Enjoy the pics. Jamie

You dont know me, but my name is Mika Shelfer and I am 26 years old. I work with Sharon' Gallivan's daughter, Laura at BCBSAL. She showed me this Blog, because I have had a unique delivery experince. We have a son that was born at 26 weeks, weighing 2 lbs and 3 oz- Tobias, we call him Tobi.. He came in 59 minutes from the time we pulled the parking ticket out, until he was taken emergency c-section because he was breach. They dont know-to this day- why he was early. He stayed at UAB for 108 days. He too, came home on an apnea monitor, which althought it had a lot of false alarms, it did save his life several times. He is now 3 years old. He has mild hearing loss and wears bilateral hearing aids, and glasses. He has had 6 surgeries, and has a gastrostomy tube because he cant drink thinned liquids. I too, gave Tobi the mother's milk....but I had to pump it for 15 months, cause he couldnt swallow properly. He is has had countless hospital admissions for lung problems and is on a lot of medication. BUT, saying all that, I could never, never, never, imagine him any differently. I went through all those feelings too of shock, anger, uncertainty, joy, all of it. And sometimes when he is sick, I still do- because he doesnt know he is any different than the other children. He is our only child, and we are planning to have more. I just wanted to say how wonderful it is that you have this Blog. I have never seen one before, so I was very impressed. This will be wonderful to look back on, as Johnathan and Jackson grow up.
When you go through situations in life as your family has, you are very thankful for those charities. I would have never thought about the March of Dimes- until I needed the advancements that they have developed for preemies. We too, are really involved with them. Sometimes it feels good to talk to a mom that can understand that their child- no matter how much that wish he wasnt- is differnt than other children. Anytime you would like to email, I am at MShelfer@bcbsal.org. My prayers are with you.
"Give me a spirit of peace, dear Lord,
Midst the storms and tempests that roll,
That I may find rest and quite within,
A calm buried deep in my soul."- DAWE

In His hands,

Mrs. Mika Shelfer
